Achlia Beach, Ierapetra, Crete

Achlia Beach, Ierapetra, Crete

Achlia Beach is a beautiful coastal cove on the southeastern coast of Crete, approximately 15 km east of Ierapetra and 7–8 km west of Makry Gialos. Surrounded by the slopes of the Thrypti mountain range, this small beach is known for its crystal-clear blue waters, rocky scenery and sheltered position.

Set within a natural bay, Achlia offers a more intimate seaside experience than the larger beaches of the region. Its combination of coarse sand, fine pebbles, natural shade and nearby facilities makes it a popular choice for visitors looking for a relaxing day by the Libyan Sea.

The surrounding area is characterised by small coastal settlements, pine trees, olive groves and rugged hills, creating a distinctive landscape typical of southeastern Crete.

Landscape and Natural Beauty

Achlia is a relatively small beach, set between rocky headlands that create a sheltered bay. The shoreline consists mainly of coarse sand and fine, rounded pebbles, while the water is famous for its vivid blue and turquoise colours.

The seabed is particularly clear, making it attractive for swimming and snorkelling. The bay's protected position often helps keep the sea relatively calm, even when stronger winds affect other parts of the southern coast. However, conditions can still change, and the seabed becomes deeper beyond the shoreline.

The surrounding landscape combines rocky slopes with pine trees and tamarisk vegetation. Trees near the beach provide natural shade, offering a pleasant alternative to the umbrellas available for hire.

The natural setting gives Achlia a distinctive character: a small beach framed by hills, vegetation and clear Mediterranean water.

Facilities and Activities

Although Achlia retains a natural atmosphere, it offers several facilities for visitors during the summer season.

  • Swimming: The clear blue water and sheltered bay make it an attractive destination for swimming.

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Organised sections of the beach offer sunbeds and parasols, while visitors can also find space to enjoy the shore independently.

  • Food and refreshments: A beachside canteen or nearby tavernas provide options for food and drinks.

  • Natural shade: Tamarisk trees and surrounding vegetation offer some shade.

  • Snorkelling: The rocky edges of the bay have interesting underwater formations and are suitable for exploring with a mask and snorkel.

  • Water sports: Some seasonal water-sport facilities may be available.

The beach also has accommodation options and small shops in the wider settlement, making it possible to stay nearby and explore this part of the coast. Facilities and services may vary according to the season.

What Makes Achlia Special

One of Achlia's greatest advantages is its sheltered location. The natural shape of the bay provides protection from several wind directions, making it a particularly appealing swimming destination when the open coastline is less comfortable.

The rocky seabed and exceptionally clear water also make it interesting for snorkelling. Exploring the edges of the bay reveals small underwater formations and marine life that are less visible from the sandy and pebble-covered central section.

The wider area has another attraction for nature lovers: Achlia Gorge, which descends from the mountainous countryside towards the coast. During the winter and after periods of rainfall, water flows through the gorge and can create a series of small waterfalls. The landscape is particularly green during the wetter months, offering a different experience from the dry summer scenery.

How to Get There

Achlia Beach is located along the coastal road connecting Ierapetra with Makry Gialos. Visitors travelling east from Ierapetra will find the turn towards the beach along the main route. A short downhill road leads from the coastal highway to the bay.

The access road is paved, although the final descent is relatively steep. Parking is available near the beach, but spaces can be limited during busy summer periods.

Approximate distances:

  • Ierapetra: 15 km

  • Makry Gialos: 7–8 km

  • Sitia: Approximately 40 km

  • Agios Nikolaos: Approximately 50 km

A car is a convenient way to reach Achlia and explore the neighbouring beaches. There are also bus connections along the Ierapetra–Makry Gialos coastal route, with a stop in the Achlia area.

Visitor Tips

  • Visit in the morning if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, particularly during July and August.

  • Bring a mask and snorkel to explore the rocky edges of the bay.

  • Remember that the seabed becomes deeper beyond the shoreline, so take care with young children and less confident swimmers.

  • Parking can be limited during the busiest summer weeks.

  • If you prefer natural shade, look for a spot near the tamarisk trees.

  • Combine your visit with nearby Agia Fotia, Mavros Kolymbos or the beaches around Makry Gialos.

  • If you enjoy walking and exploring nature, consider visiting Achlia Gorge, particularly during or after the wetter months.
