Ancient Itanos, Crete – Discover an Ancient Coastal City Near Vai
Ancient Itanos is one of the most important archaeological sites in eastern Crete. Located at Erimoupoli, just north of the famous Vai Palm Forest, the remains of this ancient coastal city stretch across low hills beside the sea. It is a fascinating place to explore if you are interested in the history of Crete and want to discover a quieter archaeological destination away from the island's busier attractions.
The city developed through its strategic position on the northeastern coast of Crete. Its natural harbour supported maritime trade and connected the island with other parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
The History of Ancient Itanos
The history of Itanos reaches back to prehistoric times, although the city became particularly important during the Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman periods. It is also mentioned in ancient literary tradition, including the works attributed to Homer.
Its prosperity was closely connected to the sea. Itanos became an important commercial centre, trading with regions of the eastern Mediterranean. Among its valuable products were Tyrian purple dye, made from marine molluscs, glassware, sponges and fish.
The city's wealth and strategic position also brought political influence and conflict. Itanos competed with neighbouring cities, particularly Praisos, over territory and important religious interests in eastern Crete. An inscription dating to 146 BC, now preserved at Toplou Monastery, records an appeal by Itanos to the Egyptian king Ptolemy VI Philometor for assistance against Praisos. It offers valuable evidence of the political relationships between the cities of the region.
Itanos continued to be inhabited during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Its later history included the development of important Christian communities, reflected in the remains of its early Christian churches.
What to See at the Archaeological Site
The remains of Ancient Itanos are spread across the coastal landscape, offering visitors an opportunity to explore different parts of the ancient settlement.
Some of the most interesting features include:
The ancient acropolises: The settlement occupied elevated areas overlooking the coast. Remains of buildings and defensive structures can still be found on the hills.
The Hellenistic quarters: Sections of the ancient residential area provide an impression of the city's urban development.
The fortification tower: A surviving defensive structure reflects the strategic importance of the settlement.
The ancient necropolis: Burial areas outside the main settlement provide evidence of the city's long history and funerary traditions.
The early Christian basilicas: The remains of several churches demonstrate the importance of Itanos during the early Christian period.
One of the distinctive characteristics of Itanos is its relationship with the sea. Parts of the ancient settlement are now submerged, and the ruins meet the coastline in several places. This creates a remarkable setting where archaeology and the natural landscape come together.
