Kouremenos Beach, Sitia, Crete
Kouremenos Beach, Sitia, Crete
Located just east of Palekastro, on the northeastern coast of Crete, Kouremenos Beach is one of the island's most famous destinations for windsurfing. Stretching for approximately 1.5 km along a wide open bay, it combines a long sandy shoreline, clear blue waters and a distinctive landscape shaped by the strong summer winds.
The beach is particularly popular with water-sports enthusiasts from Greece and abroad. However, Kouremenos is not only for windsurfers: its spacious shoreline, shallow waters in several areas and nearby traditional tavernas also make it an appealing destination for visitors who want to enjoy a day by the sea.
Landscape and Natural Beauty
Kouremenos is a long, open beach with light brown sand, fine pebbles in some sections and clear blue waters. The shoreline is bordered by low hills and open countryside, while tamarisk trees provide natural shade in certain places.
The bay has a distinctive character because of its exposure to the northerly summer winds. The combination of the open sea, wide sandy coastline and surrounding landscape makes it particularly attractive to visitors who enjoy outdoor activities.
The water is relatively shallow close to the shore in several sections, while the conditions further out are especially suitable for windsurfing.
Facilities and Activities
Kouremenos is partly organised, with facilities and services that make it convenient for a full day at the beach.
Visitors can find:
Windsurfing centres: Equipment rental, lessons and instruction are available for beginners and experienced windsurfers.
Sunbeds and umbrellas: Organised sections provide beach equipment during the main tourist season.
Tavernas and cafés: Places to enjoy refreshments and traditional Cretan food are located along and near the beach.
Accommodation: There are rooms and apartments in the surrounding area, making Kouremenos a convenient base for exploring northeastern Crete.
Swimming: The sandy shoreline and clear waters offer opportunities for swimming when sea conditions are suitable.
Windsurfing at Kouremenos
The main attraction of Kouremenos is its remarkably consistent wind. The local geography and thermal conditions strengthen the summer Meltemi winds, creating excellent conditions for windsurfing.
According to Visit Sitia, the bay experiences approximately 20–28 windy days per month between April and October, making it one of the most reliable windsurfing destinations in Europe.
The beach caters to different experience levels:
Beginners: The relatively flat water close to shore provides suitable conditions for learning with an instructor.
Intermediate windsurfers: The consistent wind offers excellent opportunities to improve technique and practise new manoeuvres.
Experienced windsurfers: Stronger winds and more challenging conditions further out in the bay provide an exciting experience.
Windsurfing schools operate along the beach, offering equipment rental, lessons and instruction. Kouremenos also hosts windsurfing events and attracts enthusiasts from across Europe.
What Makes Kouremenos Special
Kouremenos has a character quite different from the sheltered beaches found elsewhere in Crete. Its strong winds are not simply a weather feature; they are the reason the beach has become internationally recognised among windsurfing enthusiasts.
Even visitors who do not participate in water sports can enjoy watching the colourful sails moving across the bay. The activity on the water creates a lively atmosphere, particularly during the summer months.
Another appealing aspect is the combination of the beach with the traditional countryside of Palekastro. Nearby tavernas offer opportunities to enjoy local food after a day by the sea, while the surrounding area provides a good starting point for exploring the archaeological and natural attractions of northeastern Crete.
How to Get There
