Fourni is a quiet group of villages on a fertile plain in the hills of Epano Mirabello, inland from Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. What to see and do
In Fourni
Walk through the three villages. Fourni is made up of Kastelli, Kato Chorio (the lower village) and Pano Chorio (the upper village), all on the same plain and linked by a road of about 400 metres lined with eucalyptus and cypress trees. It is a gentle walk between them.
Look for Venetian architecture. The villages have many traditional stone buildings from the Venetian period, as well as narrow alleys and courtyards.
Visit the churches and monasteries. The area is known for its large number of religious sites, which is how it got the nickname “the Mount Athos of Crete”.
Visit the deserted monastery of Panagia Kerapolitissa. Close to Kastelli and Fourni, only the church of this former monastery survives, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and celebrated on 8 September. It is surrounded by the ruins of Venetian monks’ cells, water cisterns and a restored elementary school, which opened in 1848 as the first school in the area.
See the old nunnery of Kalogrades. Nearby, it also keeps only its church.
Next door: Kastelli, with tavernas
Kastelli (officially Kastellion) lies about 1 km from Fourni, on the western side of the plain. Its name comes from the Venetian word Kastelium, meaning fortress, and it is one of the oldest villages in the area, with a history going back to around 1400.
Wander the alleys. Narrow lanes, courtyards full of flowers, and terraces shaded by vines give the village its character. It has been declared a traditional settlement.
Eat at a village taverna. Kastelli has some tavernas where you can stop for lunch, a meze plate or a glass of raki.
See the Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi. A historic church with remarkable frescoes.
Visit the Monastery of Afentis Christos. A historic monastery in the village.
Come on 15 August. On the feast of the Virgin Mary, the village holds an annual festival, with local lyra music and traditional food.
