Myrtos Beach, Ierapetra, Crete

Myrtos Beach, Ierapetra, Crete

Myrtos Beach is one of the best-known seaside destinations on the southern coast of the Ierapetra region. Located approximately 13–15 km west of Ierapetra, the beach stretches along the front of Myrtos village, a charming coastal settlement known for its relaxed atmosphere, traditional tavernas and colourful gardens.

Unlike many of the smaller, more secluded coves in eastern Crete, Myrtos combines a long shoreline with the convenience of a village right beside the sea. Its distinctive grey sand, fine pebbles and generally clear waters make it an appealing destination for swimming, sunbathing and a leisurely day by the coast.

Landscape and Natural Beauty

Myrtos Beach has a long shoreline of coarse grey sand mixed with fine pebbles. The colour of the beach gives it a different appearance from the pale sandy beaches found elsewhere in Crete, while the clear waters of the Libyan Sea create attractive conditions for swimming.

The beach is relatively sheltered from the strong northerly winds that affect many other parts of the island. As a result, the sea is often calm during the summer, although conditions can naturally change with the weather.

The shoreline is widest and generally quieter as you move westwards away from the main village area. This makes it possible to find a more peaceful spot, particularly if you prefer to relax away from the organised sections near the cafés and tavernas.

Facilities and Activities

The main section of Myrtos Beach is organised and offers facilities for visitors, including sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and changing areas. There are also cafés, restaurants and traditional tavernas along the waterfront, making it easy to combine a swim with lunch or refreshments beside the sea.

Depending on the season, visitors can also find water sports and other beach activities. The beach has been associated with Blue Flag recognition, although visitors should check the current year's certification and the availability of seasonal services before travelling.

What Makes Myrtos Special

What makes Myrtos different is the close connection between the beach and the village. Rather than being an isolated stretch of coastline, it is part of a traditional seaside settlement where visitors can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, walk through narrow streets and discover small cafés and local tavernas.

The surrounding area also has considerable historical and natural interest. Nearby are two important Minoan archaeological sites, Pyrgos and Fournou Korifi, which provide evidence of ancient settlement in the region. The village also has a small Archaeological and Folk Art Museum, offering an introduction to local history.

For nature lovers, the impressive Sarakina Gorge, near the village of Mithi, is another worthwhile excursion. Its narrow rock formations, pools and flowing stream create a striking contrast with the open coastal landscape of Myrtos.

How to Get There

Myrtos Beach is located approximately:

  • 13–15 km west of Ierapetra

  • 40–45 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos

  • Approximately 50–55 km from Sitia

The beach is easily accessible by car via the coastal road connecting Ierapetra with the villages to the west. The route offers views of the southern coastline and passes through agricultural landscapes and small settlements.

Myrtos is also connected to Ierapetra by public bus, making it possible to visit without a car.

Visitor Tips

  • Choose your spot: The section near the village is more organised, while the western part of the beach is generally quieter.

  • Bring suitable footwear: The shoreline includes fine pebbles and coarse sand, so water shoes may be useful if you prefer extra comfort.

  • Stay for a meal: The waterfront tavernas are a pleasant way to experience the village after spending time at the beach.

  • Explore the surroundings: Consider combining your visit with Sarakina Gorge or the nearby Minoan archaeological sites.

  • Check the conditions: Although Myrtos is often sheltered, sea and wind conditions can vary. Check the weather before swimming.
