Psili Ammos Beach, Sitia, Crete

Psili Ammos Beach, Sitia, Crete

Just beyond the famous Vai Palm Forest, on the eastern coast of Crete, Psili Ammos Beach is a small and beautiful sandy cove offering a quieter alternative to the busy shoreline of Vai. Its name means Fine Sand in Greek, referring to the soft golden sand that covers the beach.

Surrounded by natural hills and impressive sand formations, Psili Ammos is known for its clear turquoise waters, peaceful atmosphere and relatively secluded character. Although it is very close to one of Crete's most popular beaches, it feels like a completely different destination, particularly for visitors looking for a more natural and less organised seaside experience.

Landscape and Natural Beauty

Psili Ammos lies in a small coastal ravine on the southern side of the headland separating it from Vai Beach. Its narrow sandy shoreline is framed by low hills and natural sand dunes, creating an attractive landscape with a sense of privacy.

The beach is characterised by:

  • Fine golden sand: The soft sand extends along the shoreline and gives the beach its name.

  • Turquoise waters: The sea is particularly clear, with beautiful blue-green shades.

  • Natural sand dunes: Wind-shaped sand formations create an interesting landscape behind the beach.

  • Rocky surroundings: The hills and rocky headlands provide a natural frame around the small bay.

The surrounding area belongs to the wider protected coastal environment associated with the Vai palm forest. The sand dunes are also an important natural feature, supporting specialised coastal vegetation.

Facilities and Activities

Unlike Vai, Psili Ammos is an unorganised beach, with no permanent beach bars, restaurants, sunbeds or umbrellas directly on the shore.

Visitors should bring everything they need for their stay, including drinking water, snacks and sun protection.

Activities include:

  • Swimming: The clear waters and sandy seabed make the beach particularly pleasant for swimming.

  • Relaxation: Its quieter atmosphere makes it suitable for visitors looking to escape the crowds.

  • Naturism: Psili Ammos is known as a naturist-friendly beach. Visitors should be aware of this before arriving.

  • Photography: The combination of golden sand, turquoise water and surrounding hills creates beautiful photographic opportunities.

  • Coastal walking: The surrounding coastline has small coves and natural formations that can be explored on foot.

What Makes Psili Ammos Special

The main attraction of Psili Ammos is its peaceful character. While Vai attracts large numbers of visitors because of its famous palm forest, Psili Ammos offers a more secluded setting just beyond the neighbouring headland.

Its natural dunes are particularly interesting. These formations are created by wind transporting and depositing sand along the coast. The Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark recognises the Psili Ammos dunes as part of the area's coastal geological features.

The beach is also appreciated by visitors who prefer naturist swimming. Its relatively sheltered position and separation from the main beach make it a popular choice for this purpose.

How to Get There

Psili Ammos is located approximately:

  • 25 km from Sitia

  • 7 km from Palekastro

  • Around 95 km from Agios Nikolaos

The easiest way to reach the beach is to drive to Vai and continue on foot along the marked path crossing the headland at the eastern end of Vai Beach. The walk takes approximately 5–10 minutes, depending on walking pace.

There is no direct road access to the shoreline. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear for the short trail, which includes an uneven section.

Visitor Tips

  • Bring your own supplies: There are no permanent facilities on the beach. The cafés and canteens at Vai are the closest options for food and refreshments.

  • Take an umbrella: There is very little natural shade along the sandy shoreline.

  • Wear suitable footwear: The access path crosses a rocky headland, so flip-flops may not be the most comfortable choice.

  • Be aware of the naturist-friendly character: This is an established feature of Psili Ammos.

  • Combine it with Vai: The two beaches are close enough to visit during the same trip.

  • Respect the dunes: Avoid walking over sensitive vegetation or disturbing the natural sand formations.
